Minimum Wage Increase Approved in Honduras

Increases in the minimum wage effective for the next two years range from 5 to 7%.

According to the agreement the percentage increases vary depending on the number of workers who work in companies. Where there are 1 to 50 the increase is 5.6%, from 51 to 150 it is 6.24% and for more than151 employees the percentage is 7.25%.

"The agreement will be valid for two years and will be signed today by the parties.
Last week, employers asked for a waiting period to find out the country's macroeconomic figures. Annual inflation in December 2011 was 5.6%, according to figures from the Central Bank of Honduras, BCH", reported Laprensa.hn.

Representatives of private enterprise, government and workers will meet at the National Minimum Wage Commission, scheduled for this week, to ratify a 6% increase starting from 16 August.

The agreement signed last February established a minimum wage increase of 13% to be applied in two stages, on Feb. 16 and on Aug. 16.

The Executive has established a rise of between 15 and 18% in the minimum hourly wage, depending on economic activity, occupation and the size of the business, across the country.

A press release from the Presidency of the Republic of Panama states:

In virtue of the inability of the National Minimum Wage Commission, made up of workers and employers, to reach an agreement on the minimum wage, which should come into effect from January 1, 2012, the Executive has established an increase of between 15 and 18% on the minimum hourly wage, depending on economic activity, occupation and size of businesses across the country.

The government has established by decree a minimum wage increase ranging between 3 and 6%.

The percentage increases varies with the number of company workers and whether it is in an urban or rural area.

"Workers earning $ 291.08 in urban areas, whose companies have more than 50 workers must now receive $ 311.51, so these employees will earn an additional $20.43", explained Tiempo.hn.

Wages and Productivity in Panama

The president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Panama has called for an increase in the minimum wages and for productivity to be included in the formula that determines it.

Regarding discussions on the minimum wage, no conclusion has been agreed between the parties -workers and employers, and if this situation continues until the end of the year, it could mean that the final figure is established by Executive decree.
