Movistar Invests $15 million in 4G Network in Guatemala

The company Telefonica and the Movistar brand have launched commercial HSPA+ hardware in the country.

Salvador Montes de Oca, director of Marketing and Advertising at Movistar Guatemala told the media that HSPA + technology offers download speeds of up to 21 data megabits per second (Mbps) and 5.7 Mbps for sending information.

For his part, Manuel Barrera executive of Claro "announced last November 24 the company's transition to the use of such technology.

‘With 4G technology the ability to download data to a mobile phone will be up to 5 megabytes (MB) per second (Mbps) that is three times faster than current 3G technology'", reported Prensalibre.com.

Panama Has 4G Cell Phone System

It is the first country in Central America to use Fourth Generation (4G) technology for data transmission on mobile phones.

Marco Antonio Escalante, from the Telecommunications Authority, said "the change from 3G to 4G is now up to the operators", having identified the available bands.

The companies have announced the development of fourth generation (4G) telephone networks for this year.

The customers manager at the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) said that the project to develop 4G technology is a priority for the state run company and they expect it to be in operation during the course of the year 2012.

21 million cell phones in Guatemala

From 3.1 million lines in 2004, mobile telephony in Guatemala has increased sevenfold, amounting to to 20.7 million lines at the end of 2011.

In the second half of 2011, more than two million new users were added to the market, making the number of users around the country at the end of December 2011 20.7 million, according to the Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (SIT).
