Panama's government will build a new convention center on the seafront in Panama City with a projected cost of $140 million, according to the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP).
The construction includes four plots in the area of the Amador Causeway, in the capital. The cost of land is about $156 million. The convention center will be built on a 15,000 m2 plot and the rest will be used for parking. The complex will feature an amphitheater with a capacity of 1,500 people, conference rooms and a square where restaurants will be open to the public, according to Prensa.com.
Solomon Shamah, administrator of the ATP, said (on January 18, 2012) that the tender documents will be published in the next nine days. He said the tender for the work must be done in the first quarter of the year and construction should be complete in February 2014, four months before the end of the period of the current administration. The structure will have 15 thousand meters for internal display and approximately 8000 meters for outdoor exhibitions.
Although not mentioned in the specifications, the Government will also promote the construction of at least two hotels on the perimeter of the center.
