"Tikal Papaya", "Frutas de Petén" or "Maya Papaya" are some of the brands created by papaya growers from the Petén region. "A good brand increases the commercial value of the product", explained Antonio Freire, manager of Tikal Papaya.

"'Consumers are becoming more and more demanding when it comes to the quality of fruits and vegetables they consume. Consequently, growers must assure the quality of their products, or die in the market', declared Francisco Cano, coordinator of the fruit health program at the Agriculture Ministry", published newspaper Elperiodico.com.gt.

75% of Peten's papaya production goes to the U.S., Canada, El Salvador and Honduras. The most priced variety is Hawaian Papaya: a 10 unit box can be sold for as much as $7.92 in Boston.
