Nicaragua Announces $44 Million Subsidy for Transportation Companies

The government will subsidize 200.000 daily gallons of fuel to the country’s 26.000 authorized transportation agents.

After negotiating with transportation companies, the government agreed to pay for $0.35 of each gallon of regular fuel and $0.40 of each gallon of diesel. The measure will apply to taxis and inter-urban, inter-municipal and sea transportation companies.

President Daniel Ortega “unveiled special ‘intelligent’ cards, which will be used by transportation companies to pay for cheaper fuel at gas stations”.

Nicaragua cancels transport subsidy

Since January 1st the $1.30 subsidy per gallon of fuel for public transport has been eliminated.

According to prensalibre.com, "transport cooperatives expressed their concern about the suspension, as they maintain that their operating costs are high.

"Fuel prices may have dropped, but the rest of our raw materials have increased and that needs to be addressed now, we need to adjust the fares," said the head of the National Taxi Movement, Alan Vargas.

The Chamber of Construction Companies is urging the Government to create a new financing model for home purchases.

Employers propose that the government subsidize up to four interest rate percentage points for the purchase of homes under $38,000 and up to two points for homes between $38,000 and $51,000. Current interest rates fluctuate between 7.5% and 9%.

Pilot Scheme for Ethanol Use in Guatemala

The OEA, together with the public and private sector, will implement a pilot scheme for the combined use of ethanol with gasoline.

The program will begin next year (2012) and will be developed progressively, starting with a rate of 3% ethanol per gallon of gasoline, increasing up to 10%.

Carlos Aquilino Duarte, director of Hydrocarbons for the Ministry of Economy, stated that due to problems in the development of software for collecting and processing data, they had to postpone the start until the end of the month.
