Nicaragua Looks for New Markets

This year the FTA with Chile is expected to be signed, and progress achieved in the negotiations with Ecuador.

Orlando Solórzano, the Nicaraguan Minister for Development, Industry and Commerce, stated that the agreements are part of the country's strategy to find new markets.

Laprensa.com.ni reports that the minister added that, "the markets of Central America, ALBA (countries belonging to the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas), Mexico and the USA are growing stronger with China-Taiwan also in the process of expanding and importing more Nicaraguan products".

Nicaragua Ratifies FTA with Chile

August 2011

Under the agreement, 96% of Nicaragua's export products will enter Chile duty-free.

The Legislative Assembly has ratified a Bilateral Protocol Initiative Decree between Nicaragua and Chile of the Free Trade Agreement between Central America and Chile, signed on February 22.

The countries closed the negotiation process for a Free Trade Agreement between them; it must now be signed by their governments.

Veronica Rojas, Nicaraguan Commerce Vice Minister, explained that in order to become active, the agreement must then be approved by the Legislative bodies of each country.

Nicaragua - Chile FTA in February

Both countries agreed to sign in February a bilateral protocol on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The announcement was made by the Chilean Ambassador to Nicaragua, Hernán Mena, adding that the agreement must be ratified by both congresses.

"Among the products Chile will purchase are meat, tropical fruits, shrimp, cocoa, coffee, bananas and rum.

Nicaragua-Chile FTA Ready to Sign

Nicaraguan Vice President Jaime Morales said he was optimistic that the signing will take place before the end of the year.

These were statements by the vice president, after diplomatic representative from Chile, Hernán Mena Taboada, announced that his country is ready to sign the FTA with Nicaragua.
