Nicaragua Receives $817 million in Remittances

In November 2011 the country received $130 million more than it did in the same period in 2010.

In the same period in 2010, the remittance income amounted to $741.1 million.

The increase in remittances is 10.25% compared to 2010.

"The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) projected that the flow of remittances to Nicaragua last year culminated in more than $850 million. The United States, Costa Rica, Spain and Panama are the countries of origin of these transactions", reported Laprensa.com.ni

Nicaragua received 10% more remittances in March 2010 than in the same period of 2009; it is the first year-on-year positive increase in more than 12 months.

In the first quarter of 2010 the country received $202 million in remittances, 3.06% more than the same period of 2009.

Family Remittances Help Economic Recovery

In the first two months of 2011, Nicaragua received $137 million in remittances from abroad, 10% more than in the same months of 2010.

All of Central America and Mexico has seen a recovery in remittances according to a report from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which states that money flows increased by between 6 and 16% in the first two months of this year.

Remittances to Central America Increasing

The recovery in the amount of money sent to their countries of origin by Central American emigrants remains strong.

In the first quarter, in Nicaragua, remittances totaled $ 287.5 million, 8.2% higher than in same period in 2010.

Monetary transfers to Guatemala (the largest recipient in Central America), totalled $1,758.7 million in the first five months of 2011. An increase of 10.4% compared to the same period in 2010.

Panama Wires $ 123 million

October 2010

In the first half of 2010, funds sent abroad totaled $ 123 million, $ 12 million more than the same period 2009.

Recipient countries are Colombia with $ 43 million, United States with $ 14 million, China with $ 12 million and Nicaragua with $ 6 million, according to information from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MTI).
