Nicaragua to Import Milk Powder

Given the rise in the price of milk, the government will present to the sectors involved a proposal to import milk powder in quantities and origin to be determined.

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

The Minister of Development, Industry and Trade (MIFIC) Orlando Solorzano, said his proposal provides that the same processing plants that import milk powder will then sell it in liquid form. In all cases, some of the imported powdered milk will be marketed directly through the Nicaraguan Basic Food Company (ENABAS).

The announcement of a 9% increase in milk prices triggered the search for strategies to avoid impacting consumers, generating negotiations between the government and producers, who blame energy rates for the increased costs.

Directors of the Nicaraguan Chamber of Dairy Farmers (CANISLAC) indicate that along with rising energy costs, "other factors threaten to increase production costs in the industry. For instance, in the summer there is a shortage of food for cattle so they are forced to use alternative foods. In addition, most cattle are moved to the wet area where, because of the poor condition of roads, processing plants have a harder time collecting the milk. Milk being made into cheese also reduces the supply. All these aspects raise their costs and expenses have to be transferred to the consumer. "
