The article by Ferley Henao "Without Productivity There is no Paradise”, highlights the need to accelerate the pace in search of agricultural productivity in Central America, showing how slow countries of the region are progressing, not only against first world nations but also in relation to other Latin American countries.

"In terms of knowledge and therefore of productivity, technology, competitiveness and profitability, the rural sector in most countries of the region is closer to the nineteenth century (XIX) than to the twenty-first century (XXI)."

"The impact of current situation is very serious and it shows on indicators such as unemployment, immigration, trade deficit, low standard of living, food supply, poor credit, investment, inflation and environmental degradation.

“Globalization and technological advancements in the second half of the twentieth century, including all the sciences related to the rural world make it imperative to put agriculture in line with global reality in terms of competitiveness."

"Based on the foregoing considerations, it is essential to encourage agricultural productivity through knowledge transfer programs in order to achieve effective and sustainable development because, in addition to the increase in direct jobs, it has indirect positive effects such as dynamism of the economy and effective contribution to food supply.”

The Problems of Being Small

October 2010

In El Salvador the small size of lots conspires against productivity and profitability in the agricultural sector.

Only sugarcane crops and coffee meet the demand within the country, having to import corn, beans, rice, fruits and vegetables in order to supply the needs of the population.

Nicaragua's low productivity

July 2008

Productivity is lagging in Nicaragua, says an unsigned editorial in the Managua newspaper El Nuevo Diario. It says this is not only because of the limited role the country assigns it as a supplier of cheap primary materials, but also because large producers rely on their revenue sources instead of trying to increase efficiency.

As a result, the editorial says, it's not surprising that agricultural yields in Nicaragua are smaller than in the rest of Central America even though it has better land.

Costa Rica Agro Problems

October 2011

The slowdown in the economy, tax reforms and devaluation of the colon against the U.S. dollar are making the sector uncompetitive.

Since last July, the sector's productivity rates have been down, a situation causing concern to producers.

According to an article in Elfinancierocr.com, "The Executive is preparing for a storm if the global economic environment remains turbulent, because most of the national agricultural production goes abroad. However, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) claims to have a good umbrella to whether the storm and minimizes the effects of the increasingly arid agricultural employment atmosphere (in August it hit its lowest level since 2006), arguing that his fall is not due to a loss of jobs, but growth in the informal sector."

El Salvador: Suggestions for Improving Agriculture

September 2011

Lack of modernization processes and machinery accounts for the low competitiveness of agricultural production.

In order to increase production and eliminate the need to import grains when there is a shortfall in production and the needs of the local market cannot be met, industry representatives are suggesting the use of machinery that could triple crop yields.
