Number of Independent Workers in Costa Rica Doubles

The number of people individually insured in the country's social security agency (CCSS) has doubled in the last five years.

According to CCSS records, at the beginning of 2005 those insured as independent workers totaled 136,000 while in July the number had reached 289,000.

"This kind of employee now makes up one in five of all formal workers in Costa Rica, representing 20% out of a total of 1.4 million. Five years ago they represented 13% of all formal workers," reports Nacion.com.
