Oil Company Transfer Contract Authorized

The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Guatemala has authorized the General Fuel Company to transfer a contract to Ceiba Petroleum.

The transfer is of 90% of the rights and obligations of the Contract for Production Sharing Number 4-93.

"This transfer of rights was agreed on December 20th at the offices of notary Morales Luis Fernando Pinzon, according to the official daily publication.

Ceiba Oil is a subsidiary of the Canadian company Trinity Oil Plumas Capital Corp. and is exploring the area A-2-92, in southern Petén", published Elperiodico.com.gt

Uncertainty Over Oil Concession

The change of government in Guatemala has delayed the ratification of a contract awarded to City Petén for oil drilling in an area with 140 million barrels.

On October 31st, 2011, at the end of the Colon administration, the Ministry of Energy and Mines signed a concession contract to exploit oil in the Yalcanix (PTN 1-2008) area with the Guatemalan company City Petén after a tender in which only two other companies, Perenco Guatemala and the aforementioned City Petén participated. The offer from Perenco was $11 million and City Petén’s was $30 million. Both companies have experience in oil exploration in the country.

President Mauricio Funes admitted the possibility that El Salvador will enter into an oil agreement with Venezuela and Caribbean nations in order to purchase fuel under more favourable payment terms.

Pacific Rubiales to Explore Oil in Guatemala

The Colombia - Canadian firm will operate the 7-98 oil contract, which has a potential for 4,000 million barrels.

Pacific Rubiales has signed an agreement with Flamingo Energy Investment Ltd, Guatemala Chx Limited and Atlantic Petroleum Company SA, whereby they will get a 55% stake and operation of the oil extraction located in Petén.

Oil Contract Awarded in Guatemala

Without disclosing the name of the company, the Ministry of Energy and Mines has announced that they have awarded a contract for exploration and exploitation of oil in Petén.

The Minister of that department, Alfredo Pokus, noted that they won't reveal the name of the contractor until the company itself has been notified.
