Overwhelming Negative For Metal Mining

In consultation with the population of a municipality in Guatemala where mining companies are setting up, 98.9% of residents registered on the electoral roll, said NO to mining activities.

The municipality of Nueva Santa Rosa, in southeastern Guatemala, asked the inhabitants to decide on the installation, development and operation of chemical metal mining projects in their territory, in a consultation process which will be extended to other municipalities of Santa Rosa.

Only 1.1% of the population of New Santa Rosa voted YES to the precious metal mining activity in the municipality.

The agreement signed by 22 companies in the extractive industry will mean an increase in annual revenues from mining royalties of about $64 million.

Having previously paid 1% in royalties, gold and silver mining companies will pay the Guatemalan state a rate of 4%, said the President Otto Perez Molina.
