Panama: Discussions Begin on Forest Law Reform

A subcommittee will be created to discuss the reform proposal with all sectors involved.

Thursday, December 15, 2011

A press release from the National Assembly of Panama reads:

Members made up from the Commission on Population, Environment and Development will meet in the next few days to create a subcommittee that will help consult and discuss with all relevant parties Bill No. 97 amending Act 1 of 1994, through which a forestry law is established in the Republic of Panama.

This was announced by Deputy Victor Juliao, president, who is also a proponent of the legislative initiative, in the company of his colleagues Dalia Bernal and Rony Arauz.

Deputy Juliao said that the draft is not written in "stone", which is the reason for holding the meetings with all parties involved to draft the document and refine the concepts, so that eventually they will have produced the best law meeting current needs and securing the country's forest heritage.

Protecting the environment
He argued that the bill proposes that the State, through the National Environmental Authority, take measures to combat deforestation by establishing a forestry policy in order to achieve an integrated, scientific and coherent management of the country's forest resources.
