Panama Maritime IX: February 8 - 11

Operators from more than 20 countries will participate in the four day port event, considered to be the most important one in the region.

The inauguration will be held on February 8, 2009 and will include the presence of the Secretary General of the World Maritime Organization (OMI), Efthimios Mitropoulos, who will be the main speaker along with important local and international guest speakers from the shipping world.

The Congress will cover topics such as: "The Responsibility of the Maritime Industry in Protecting the Environment," to be presented by the Secretary General of the OMI; the General Merchant Marine Law; New Tools for Developing an Open Registry..."

Panama Maritime IX to be held in February 2009

This national and international conference is considered to be one of the most important maritime events in Latin America and the Caribbean.

It will be held in Panama City from February 9-11, 2009. It is organized by the Panama Maritime Law Association, which has a membership of more than 200 local lawyers, along with the Maritime Chamber which represents more than 100 maritime companies, the Panama Canal Authority and the Panama Maritime Authority.

New environmental rules for Panamanian ships

The ratification of the 2001 Bunker Convention by Panama will increase insurance costs for ships.

The "International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage," means that the owner of the ship is responsible for pollution damages caused by bunker fuel in the ship and for covering the cost of preventative measures.

Panama Maritime Conference Organized

January 2012

In February, the ‘Maritime Summit for a legal and logistics global platform' will be held.

The Panama Canal Authority and the Iberoamerican Institute of Maritime Law will hold an international conference in February with participation of specialists in the maritime sector.

Maritime Ministry proposed for Panama

August 2008

The president of the Panama Maritime Chamber (CMP), Ruben Karamañites proposes that a Maritime Ministry be established.

In order for the maritime sector, which represents 20% of the GDP of Panama, to have representation on the Cabinet Council, the creation of a Maritime Ministry is being proposed.
