Panama: Music on Cell Phones

The marketing of digital products via mobile phones is gaining strength in the country.

The Panamanian music industry is cashing in on the existing cellular network in the country through which they selling their products in digital format.

The business of digital music sales is taking hold throughout the Central American region, where major labels have catalogs of music available to mobile users who can purchase songs or entire albums on their phones.

A report in Padigital.com.pa notes: "Jorge Luis Escobar, CEO of Discos Tamayo, explained that in 2009 – thanks to the development of a network of alliances, their ability to export has grown. They have managed in the first half of 2010, to reach a world wide market via online music downloads and in 17 countries in Latin America through mobile devices".

Telephone Companies Invest $500 million in Nicaragua

Orlando Castillo, executive chairman of the Nicaraguan Institute of Telecommunications and Post Offices, Telcor, said in an interview with a local television station, that the investment has been mainly used to expand mobile phone services.

The Spanish company Movilway is offering recharging services and transactions via mobile phones.

The company will offer in the country the ability to buy credit for mobile phones from anywhere in the world, and projects that this year it will reach 2,500 points of sale.

Panama Has 4G Cell Phone System

August 2011

It is the first country in Central America to use Fourth Generation (4G) technology for data transmission on mobile phones.

A press release from Claro reads:

“Panama, August 9, 2011 .-
Claro, a leading telecommunications company in Central America, presents the first fourth generation 4G mobile network based on HSPA + technology which will allow its customers to increase the transmission speed of data for browsing and downloading content via a mobile Internet service either by using their cell phones or by logging onto a computer or laptop with a 4G modem.
