Panama Pushes Back Marketplace Design Bidding

Authorities decided to give companies more time to prepare their bids for designing 8 public marketplaces; bids are now due on June 4th.

Fernando Duque, Cold Chain secretary, explained that they extended the deadline as many companies had been unable to complete the certification procedures required in the rules.

“The contract should be awarded by the end of June”, reported Prensa.com.

Once the contract is awarded, authorities will start 8 separate acquisition processes to build each one of the markets.

The Cold Chain Secretary reported that in May 5th they will conduct a standardization meeting and on May 20th they will receive the proposals.

After this, the government will put out to tender the construction of these public marketplaces, in 8 separate processes, one for each marketplace.

The public acquisition process to hire a company to design 8 public marketplaces has been contested by one of its participants, CAU AH Domar.

This company was ruled out of the competition for not submitting banking references. They have asked the public acquisitions directorate to reconsider this decision.

As the final link in the Cold Chain, Mercapanamá may be used for agro-industrial processes for exports.

Acknowledging that the Food Market in Panama City does not have adequate infrastructure for marketing foods according to the best international standards, industry officials have decided to build a new center.

It is called "chain" because it is made up of different stages, and if some are compromised, it could result in damage to the quality and safety of the product.


Cases of health damage due to the cold chain breaking up are increasing in developed countries, according to World Health Organization, in up to 30% per year.


Low temperatures not only ensure the organoleptic characteristics of food (texture, flavor, odor, color), but also stop reproduction of microorganisms and delay the loss of food quality. However, we must not forget that the cold does not kill microorganisms or stop the metabolic activity of its components, only slows their growth and food spoilage.
