Panama Tenders Oil Exploration in Darien

Before the end of the year, the government will put out an international tender for exploring possible oil deposits in the Province of Darien.

The announcement was made on Tuesday September 13 by Renzo Samudio, director of Hydrocarbons.

A recent study by the Venezuelan consultancy company OTS confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons in the area.

According to an article in Prensa.com, "the official said that the exploration based on this tender and for next year will be in the Darien Garachine-Sambu area in the waters of the Pacific coast, and in Bayan-Chucunaque-Atrato, on land outside protected areas."

The company was contracted by the Government in order to identify potential areas for exploitation.

The study to be conducted throughout the country will be funded by the Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF) and the State.

Referring to the areas studied, the Minister of Economy and Finance mentioned Bocas del Toro, in the border with Costa Rica, south of Chiriqui, the Gulf of Panama and the Gulf of Uraba.

The energy minister said that analysis of the information shows hydrocarbon fields in Bocas del Toro, Azuero, in the Gulf of Darien, and the Caribbean Coast.

The National Secretariat of Energy had hired the company to OTS, with funding from the Corporation Andina de Fomento (CAF), to rearrange, classify and analyze the existing information on oil exploration.

The Government plans to tender in March 2011, concessions for the exploration and exploitation in different areas of the country.

As part of the process and to make it more attractive for investment, changes in current exploitation of hydrocarbons, which dates back to 1987, will be studied.

The government will sign two concession contracts with Infinity Energy for oil and natural gas exploration and exploitation.

According to the article from "Proceso Digital," the Nicaraguan vice-minister of Energy and Mining, Lorena Lanzas, pointed out that "the granting of these concessions have already been approved by the Regional Governments of the Southern and Northern Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, in accordance with the law."
