The company "Bolsa Nacional de Productos S.A.", also known as Baisa, has invited bids for this import, that will compensate the difference between demand for corn and national corn production, which is not enough.

Nicaragua Imports Duty Free Maize

Due to shortages, a Ministerial Decree N 028-2011 establishes an import quota of yellow corn shortage equivalent to 8,000 metric tons, classified under tariff item 1005.90.20.00 of the Central American Tariff System (SAC), which will apply a tariff to import (DAI) of zero percent, 0%.

Guatemala guarantees growth of corn production of up to 30 per cent

The Government of Guatemala says that the harvest of white corn will grow by as much as 30 per cent this year, enough to satisfy local demand and possibly even to export some surplus to el Salvador.

Guatemala's Minister of Agriculture, Raúl Robles, said the government's Basic Grain Emergency Plan will ensure that white corn production will rise to 36.5 million quintals. A quintal weighs 101.5 pounds, or just over 46 kilograms.
