Panama's Maritime Authority said the main aim of the congress was to debate how the region's ports could face the challenges of recent trends in maritime traffic.

Movement of containers grows 14.2% in Panama

Ports in Panama moved 2,935,000 containers (20') between January and August 2008

The figure represents an increase of 14.2% compared to the same period last year.

There were 1.3 million TEU's (Twenty-feet Equivalent Unit) unloaded and 1.6 million loaded according to statistics from the Panama Maritime Authority.
