Peruvian Companies Looking to Central America

Looking to take advantage of the FTA being negotiated, Peruvian companies, mainly in the logistics sector, are hurrying up the process of setting up offices in the region.

Carlos Durand, president of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL), said "Some Peruvian companies are beginning to see the Central American bloc, with which we are negotiating the trade agreement, as a next step for operational growth and positioning in foreign markets," reported Americaeconomia.com.

He added that the benefits of the future FTA will not only be used by large companies but also contribute to the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

As a prelude for such negotiations, a trade mission composed by Peruvian authorities and businessmen will tour the region.

The group will visit El Salvador, Costa Rica and Guatemala.

Peruvian Embassy in El Salvador informed: "The objective of this visit is to resume Free Trade Agreement talks, which were started in 2008. Negotiations could begin in the first half of 2010", reported newspaper La Prensa Gráfica.

Negotiations are scheduled to start in the second half of 2009.

The minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism in Peru, Mercedez Araoz, said while attending the Euro-Latina summit held in Lima in May, that dialogue for an eventual FTA with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama y Dominican Republic.

Peru and Central America Analyze Potential FTA

With the aim of making progress toward a free trade agreement (FTA), the region's Ministers for Trade are meeting with their Peruvian counterpart in the Panamanian capital.

Present at the meeting will be Honduras' Héctor Escalante, Costa Rica's Fernando Ocampo and El Salvador's Carlos Moreno, representing their respective countries, which have all expressed an interest in participating in the FTA negotiations with Peru.

Central America Begins Negotiating FTA with Peru

The first round of FTA negotiations between Peru and the region began on Monday in the Peruvian capital.

Negotiation teams from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama and Peru are participating. Guatemala and Nicaragua have decided not to join current negotiations, but an accession clause will be included in case they want to join later.
