Cleaning the canal to make its depth 9 meters at low tide and 11 at high tide, would increase maritime operators' interest in including the port of La Union in their transportation routes by sea.
In the same vein, 4 used cranes are being aquired, which is being managed in the United States.
The Port of La Union, built three years ago at a cost of $200 million and funded with Japanese capital, is still waiting for the government to define which concession model will be used.
The manager of the Port of La Union, Milton Lacayo, said, "Last year the port of La Union mobilized 5,000 containers, giving revenues of $461,387, although it stayed in the red. 20 ships arrived and moved 38.3 million metric tons to ports in other parts of El Salvador, and to ports located between the terminals of Balboa, Panama, and Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico. Lacayo said that as of September 20th , 2011 they began receiving a weekly boat from APL and Hamburg Süd, which have joined up to move goods from the north U.S.Pacific coast and the Far East to the port of La Union, from where it is distributed to other Central American Pacific ports, two in Peru and Guayaquil, in Ecuador. The port of La Union has a monthly payroll of $110,000. "

The port terminal has received the first vessel from the shipping line APL Singapore.
The shipping company APL, Singapore together with Hamburg Süd, Germany, included the port of La Union its new route linking the west coast of South America, Central America, Mexico and the United States.

The companies Hamburg Süd and APL (American President Lines) will start operating at the marine terminal from September 13.
Ships will arrive at the terminal on Tuesdays, with three ships alternating each week.

The director of the Board of the Maritime Port Authority (MPA), Fredy Villalta, said that in order to achieve a balance in operations they need to handle between 300 and 400 thousand TEUs, adding that "we need external cargo."

The La Union Port, which was built at a total cost of $161 million, is ready to receive the first shipments at the end of this month.
Unless the decision is not made to turn over the port partially or fully in concession to a private party to operate it, the first ships could be docking at the new and modern infrastructure in the short term.
