Remittances to Guatemala grow by 8.69 percent

Despite the worldwide economic slowdown, remittances to families in Guatemala from members who live abroad have grown by 8.69 percent for the January-June period this year.

However, the rate of growth is down a bit from last year, when remittances increased by 12.64 percent year-over-year.
The Bank of Guatemala reports that during June Guatemalans remitted 384 million dollars. So far this year they have sent home 2.14 billion dollars.

Families in El Salvador received about 1.94 billion dollars through remittences from family members living abroad during the first six months of this year, according to the nation's Central Reserve Bank.

This is about 120 million dollars more than the amount sent home in 2007.

Remittances to Honduras grow 11.9%

The remittances sent by Honduran immigrants to their families in the country were over $1.360 million for the first six months of this year.

The dollars sent by honduran immigrants, most of them living in the United States, are the main source of foreign currency in the country, acknowledged the authorities. In 2006, remittances accounted for 25% of the country's gross domestic product.

Guatemala: Real value of remittances drops

The economic crisis in the US, combined with inflation and the value of the quetzal, is affecting a million homes that living off remittances.

Up to 27 September, the Bank of Guatemala reported that income from family remittances was $3.2 billion, an increase of only 6.4% in comparison to the same period in 2007 when the total was $3.05 billion at an increase of 14.2%; in 2006 remittance grew by 23%.
