According to the Monthly Economic Activity Index (IVAE), developed by the Central Bank of El Salvador, retail was the single worst performing economic sector during 2009.
The bank remarked that several sectors recovered during March 2010, including commerce, finance, manufacture and agriculture. As a result, the IVAE index marked its first positive increase (0.8%) since July 2008.
“Jorge Hasbún, president of the Commerce Committee at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of El Salvador, acknowledged that a recovery is underway, if comparing to last year’s levels. ‘The situation is not as worse as it was. In general, there is more movement, this is good, we have certainly halted the freefall, but we are not growing yet”, reported Elsalvador.com.
