Tuesday, December 6, 2011

A press release from the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Panama reads:

Unlike the previous two years, more cattle were slaughtered (9.0%) and more chicken meat was produced (9.4%), both domestically and for export.

This was highlighted in an Economic and Social Analysis report by the Ministry of Economy and Finance which noted that until July of this year, 223.242 cattle were slaughtered, 236.519 pigs and 66.071 metric tons of chicken meat was produced, while in in 2010 the figures were 204.709 for beef, 220.010 for pigs and 60.399 metric tons of poultry meat, during the same 7 month period.

Regarding the export of beef, the report stresses that whether fresh, chilled or frozen, last year's figures were surpassed by 599 metric tons or 22%, and the same was true for edible offal (719 metric tons or 46%) and live animals.

It is emphasized however, that there is concern in the agricultural sector about the increase in the price of raw materials such as corn and soybeans, which affect the production of poultry and swine. This aspect is being addressed by the implementation of the food chain project in Panama as a government strategy to be aware of the existing volumes of grain, prices and terms of imports, so that they can take measures to increase production and performance, to the benefit of producers, industries and consumers.
