Russia Opens Transatlantic Sea Link With South America

Maersk line will open a new sea route: Guayaquil – Panama Canal – Rotterdam – Bremenhaven – San Petersburg.

The Danish company will operate 6 container ships in this new route, with a weekly frequency.

“With this new route, Latin American companies will have more opportunities of selling fresh fruit to Russia, specially banana, as these ships feature modern containers with refrigeration systems”.

Record Cargo in Panama Canal

October 2011

The 322 million tons that passed through the Panama Canal during the 2011 fiscal year, exceed the load recorded in 2010 by 7.1%, and is 2.9% above the previous record achieved in 2007.

A press release from the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) states that:

Despite this increase, there was a decrease in attended vessels.

In the first eight months of the year freight grew by 33% compared to the same period last year, reflecting the dynamism experienced by the ports of Guatemala this year.

The increase in cargo carried and the decrease in ships that arrived in Puerto Quetzal is explained in part by the larger ships being used now, which are able to carry more cargo than before.

Guatemalan Ports Moved 17.1 Million TM2

In 2010, maritime freight activity recorded an increase of 7% compared to 2009.

Rolando Rousselin, director of the National Ports Commission (NPC), noted the successful and historic figures.

"According to NPC statistics, Puerto Quetzal was the one which reported more activity, an increase of 13 percent, followed by Puerto Santo Tomas de Castilla, with 9 percent, while Puerto Barrios reported 8 percent," explained Prensalibre.com.

Guatemala: Maritime Freight Transport Up 13%

In the first seven months of the year, maritime freight traffic has increased 13% relative to the same period of 2009.

According to data from Guatemala's state ports authority (CPN in Spanish), from January to July ships moved a total of 10.5 million metric tons (TM2) of cargo (including imports and exports).
