Salvadoran Port of La Union Reactivated

The port terminal has received the first vessel from the shipping line APL Singapore.

The shipping company APL, Singapore together with Hamburg Süd, Germany, included the port of La Union its new route linking the west coast of South America, Central America, Mexico and the United States.

According to an article on the website of La Prensa Gráfica, '"We are expanding our presence in the Pacific coast of Central America, connecting with Lazaro Cardenas, on the West Coast of the United States to South America to the port of Guayaquil (Ecuador) and Paita (Peru)', said the line manager for APL Honduras, Alejandro Haussermann.

'The new service allows a broader coverage that connects the growing market in the west coast of Central America's to the Hamburg Süd network’, said the shipping company in a statement."

Two Shipping Lines to Begin Operations in Puerto La Union

The companies Hamburg Süd and APL (American President Lines) will start operating at the marine terminal from September 13.

Ships will arrive at the terminal on Tuesdays, with three ships alternating each week.

The President of the Autonomous Executive Port Commission (CEPA), Enrique Córdova, also referred to progress being made in the drafting of the decree to authorize the concession.

Shipping Companies Announce Increased Cargo to Puerto Cortes

APL and Crowley have confirmed they will increase the volume of cargo shipped to Puerto Cortes, Honduras.

Crowley has requested permission for about 18.000 additional containers, completing about 75.000 containers per year, representing an increase of 12.5% compared to 2010.

Two New Pacific Shipping Services

MSC shipping announced 2 new services connecting North, Central and South America on the Pacific coast.

In a press release, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company said that the service called "Puma" will run between the US, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama.

Port of La Union Continues to Drift

Even though the few ships that dock in La Union are not sufficient to cover operating expenses, plans are afoot to spend $25 million on dredging an access channel.

Cleaning the canal to make its depth 9 meters at low tide and 11 at high tide, would increase maritime operators' interest in including the port of La Union in their transportation routes by sea.
