Scotia Bank to Open Office in Guatemala

By November the Canadian funded bank will open an administrative office in order to introduce its brand to the country.

The bank has had a presence in the country since 2008, when it acquired the Banco de Antigua.

The Minister of Economy, Luis Velasquez, told the media that on July 20, the Monetary Board will approve the procedure for entry into the country.

"Scotia Bank operations will be targeting the financing of micro, small and medium enterprises with the aim of generating employment and productivity in this Central American country, the official said", published Siglo21.com

Scotiabank builds Latin presence with acquisition in Guatemala

Scotiabank continued its advance in Latin America with the acquisition in Guatemala of Banco de Antigua. The only countries in Central America where the Canadian bank has still to establish a presence are Nicaragua and Honduras.

Along with Banco de Antigua, Scotiabank acquired some shares in the Dominican Republic's Banco de Ahorro y Crédito, plust an option to purchase Peru's Banco de Trabajo.

New bank to begin operations in El Salvador

The Industrial Bank of El Salvador is completing the procedures at the Financial System Superintendence to formally become a bank.

According to the Superintendence, shareholders will hold 1% or more of the social capital of said company which is being created and includes: Banco Industrial S.A. (from Guatemala), Construagro S.A. (from El Salvador), y José Luis Zablah Touché (from El Salvador).

Scotiabank expands its Nicaragua presence

April 2008

Scotiabank has decided to expand its Nicaragua position by acquiring the remaining 49% of the shares of Financiera Arrendadora Centroamericana (Finarca) which it operates there.

Scotiabank bought all of the outstanding shares on April 1, after obtaining authorization from the office of Nicaragua's Superintendent of Banks and other Financial Institutions.

HSBC Enters Guatemala

September 2009

The financial group will open a commercial office in the country in October.

Paul Stickland, HSBC's representative in Guatemala, explained that the new office will service Guatemalan and multinational corporations.

Regarding the possibility of acquiring a local bank, Stickland said: "It is a long term possibility, but nor our immediate objective".
