Successful Forestry Project in Nicaragua

During the past five years the Cuenta Reto del Milenio invested $ 6.8 million in a project which generated 3.000 jobs, benefiting over 3.200 farmers.

Located in Leon and Chinandega, western Nicaragua, the project allowed reforestation of nearly 7.500 hectares of forest for timber and charcoal.

The article in Laprensa.com.ni by Mario José Moncada, reported that "The western region now has zoning areas suitable for different species, organized and trained human resources in forestry as well as new timber related businesses."

The MCA also provided five portable ovens for production of charcoal, with capacity of 360 tons per year. Coal demand in the region is estimated at 1.241 tons per year.

Forest Concessions Grow in Guatemala

The size of areas granted as forest concessions to communities, mainly in the northern Peten zone, rose from 510,000 hectares in 2007 to 680,000 in 2011.

In the last year the volume of exports multiplied by 13, up from 797 tonnes to 11,200 tons, with a total value of $2.5 million.

Nicaragua: $15 Million for Afforestation

The International Agricultural Development Fund will use the funds in a forestry program in the Northern Caribbean Region.

The entity responsible for executing the project will be Nicaragua's Magfor, the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry.

"Minister Ariel Bucardo assured ... they are working in a proposal for the project, adding that they hope they can include production infrastructure in it", reported Laprensa.com.ni.

In 2010, 1.07 million cubic feet of logs were produced and only between 2% and 4% of the land was used for conservation and forestry production, according to sources in the timber sector.
