Telecoms in Guatemala Generated $2,400 million in 2011

A study by Pyramid Research says that the telecommunications market in 2011 generated revenues of $2,400 million.

Of the total, 69% ($1,600 million) corresponds to the mobile phone business and the rest is divided between internet, cable television and fixed telephony services.

"Guatemala is one of the countries with the fastest growth of mobile telephone use, the number of lines increased from 64,194 in 1997 to over 18.5 million in June 2011 with an average of 127 lines per100 inhabitants due to market privatization and the arrival of 2 new operators in the market", reported Elperiodico.com.gt.

Growth projections provided by Pyramid Research indicate that the telecommunications market will grow at an annual rate of 4.6% reaching $3,000 million in 2016.

21 million cell phones in Guatemala

From 3.1 million lines in 2004, mobile telephony in Guatemala has increased sevenfold, amounting to to 20.7 million lines at the end of 2011.

In the second half of 2011, more than two million new users were added to the market, making the number of users around the country at the end of December 2011 20.7 million, according to the Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (SIT).

The increase in the number of mobile phone line users during the first half of 2011 was almost half a million.

As of 30 June, the total number of lines stood at 18,528,667, an increase of 5.7% compared to the same period in 2010, according to preliminary information from the Superintendency of Telecommunications (SIT).
