Up to 60% Losses in Corn and Bean Harvests

Though Salvadoran producers' forecasts were to exceed the previous year's harvest, the heavy rains have led to huge losses.

Friday, September 3, 2010

El Salvador's Farming Ministry (MAG in Spanish) had initially estimated that losses would be in the region of 30% for basic grains, in particular corn and bean.

However, according to Elsalvador.com, new estimates indicate that only 2.6 million hundredweight of bean will be produced, compared to the 2.8 million initial forecast. Similarly, new forecasts for corn are 19.4 million compared to 20.8 million initially.

Producers are more pessimistic. While they agree with forecasts of 30% losses in corn harvests, for beans their predictions are up to 60%.
