The certification project—implemented by Wal-Mart Central America’s “Tierra Fértil” program and the “Eda de la Cuenta del Milenio Honduras” program—endeavors to offer technical training to farmers and to implement best practices throughout business activities. On this occasion, eight producers were certified.
According to Laprensahn.com, "With this certificate, producers are complying with a group of standards and technical recommendations that are applicable to production, processing, and the transportation of food. This program is aimed at assuring protections for safety, human health, and the environment."

Tougher competition makes it a requisite to have internationally certified processes and production.
However, certification costs are considerable, and vary depending on the subject, the time required for implementation, and the level of certification.
A local certification alternative for Honduran companies is Quara Group: "established little more than a year ago, it assists the local entrepreneur in getting to know and implement standards in their organizations, which can be certified and recognized by ISO, the International Standards Organization", reported newspaper Laprensahn.com.

The National Quality System Law that was recently approved by Congress strengthens companies in the area of certification.
What stands out the most in the new law, which was drafted with the support of specialists from the Institute of Metrology of Germany, is the creation of the Quality Institute, forcing the state to allocate funds for the development of metrology, accreditation and standardization mechanisms.

Beginning this year, companies can voluntarily participate in the certification system for tourist services.
The Government, the private sector and Spanish consultant company Applus are working in quality standards which will be imposed on companies in order to achieve certification. Thirty companies are participating in the pilot plan.
