Small firms offered US$1 million in loans for supplies to Café Britt

Small-business suppliers of Costa Rica's Café Britt travel, souvenir and coffee retailer are to be offered US$1 million in loans from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE).

The loans are to be offered under an agreement between Café Britt and the BCIE. Café Britt will back the loans.

CABEI Loans for Cacao and Coffee

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) has developed a program to assist small coffee and cacao growers.

Called CAMBio (Central American Markets for Biodiversity), the project is expected to assist over 2.000 growers of the region.

“So far, CAMBio has lent $1.9 million to 2.310 small coffee and organic cacao growers in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Honduras, benefiting some 11.550 people”, reported newspaper La Tribuna.

Café Britt Opens New Stores in Costa Rica

The company is currently installing two new stores in the resort Hotel Paradisus Playa Conchal in Guanacaste.

The economic crisis has indeed caused a decline in the arrival of tourists to the Hotel Paradisus Playa Conchal resort, but the General Manager of Café Britt, Pablo Vargas, is “convinced that once the crisis ends the harvest from the current investments will bring better fruits,” according to Elfinancierocr.com.

Café Britt Plans $8 Million Investments

In 2010, the company will expand its presence in Costa Rica and in various Latin American Countries.

Pablo Vargas, General Manager, explained they will invest $2.5 million in developing two stores in Juan Santamaría and Daniel Oduber airports.

"The remaining $5.5 million will be invested in several Latin American countries", added Vargas to Nacion.com.

Nicaragua to boost coffee growers with US$20 million in aid

Nicaragua's government is to invest US$20 million this year in a program of technical and financial assistance for coffee growers. Coffee is the country's leading export.

Cash will be on offer to provide up to 20,000 growers with facilities for the purchase of machinery and equipment, said Walter Navas, a leader of the National Coffee Council (Concafé).
