El Salvador has signed an agreement worth $5.6 million with the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC in Spanish) in order to strengthen agriculture.

Despite the current context of volatility and high food prices, in the long term, the agricultural sector in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) will be able to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by having available land - albeit concentrated in a few countries- a relative abundance of water, biodiversity and well-educated human resources.

With a program of incentives for small producers, Nestlé is trying to stimulate productivity of its 3,500 suppliers, in order to increase milk production.
The company processes the raw material at its site in Nata, Cocle Province with which it then supplies to Central America.

The national agricultural program will prioritize the funding of small producers dedicated to farming basic mass consumption grains.
Initially the government intended for private banks to finance, via the program, all micro producers, but in the face of the banks mistrust of the system of legal guarantees, only producers of basic grains have been prioritised.

The Honduran government announced a series of measures to support the agricultural sector, including access to funding of over $ 40 million.
These resources will, among other things, give farmers the ability to implement technological advances which could improve planting results.
In the article outlined by América Economía, "In addition to the funding, a series of measures to support the production process is being prepared, including some to facilitate producers access to financing and support the livestock sector."

The Livestock and Agricultural Industry chamber unveiled a plan based on productivity, diversification, quality, environmental sustainability and food safety.
Otto Kuhsiek, president of CAMAGRO, noted that over 1.6 million jobs depend on agriculture, of which 81% are located in rural areas, half of them in family companies and the rest in large-scale, high productivity companies.

Howard G. Buffett Foundation announced it will disburse the funds to assist 24 000 small farmers in Central America.
The resources will be channeled over the next four years through the "Purchase for Progress" program, which seeks to improve access to markets for Salvadoran, Nicaraguan and Guatemalan farmers.

Seminar covering best practices in agricultural value chains and financing its components.
The seminar is being organized to take place in Costa Rica in the second half of November, 2009.
The target audience will be representatives of financial entities active in the agricultural sector, non-financial companies with a stake in the sector (producers, cooperatives, processors, exporters, marketers, input suppliers), Government authorities, business chambers, non-governmental organizations, international organizations and academic the use of agricultural value chains as a mechanism for offering financial services to all the stakeholders involved.

Costa Rica's National Coffee Plantation Renewal Plan would start with 35.000 hectares and a $4 million investment.
Approximately 40% of coffee plantations in Costa Rica are more than 20 years old, which diminishes its productivity. Renewing 35.000 hectares means replacing some 17 million plants, project that will take 10 years.

Through an interest rate subsidy, small and medium producers who apply will only have to pay the basic passive rate.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and the Livestock Development Corporation (COFORGA) will subsidize, with half a million dollars, the four points over the basic passive rate that are charged for development loans. In this way, small and medium producers who enter the program will pay only the basic passive rate (currently 11.25% annually).
