The coffee sector reported an increase of almost 4% in productivity, with collections of 26.5 quintals per acre, according to estimates for the 2011-2012 harvest . This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Xinia Chaves, on Thursday, while participating in the fourth ‘Ciclo‘ conference organized to celebrate the 70th anniversary of MAG.

The global market for frozen fruits and vegetables continues to grow and is estimated to reach 22.6 million tons by 2015.
Analysis conducted by the Trade Office of Costa Rica (PROCOMER) can be extrapolated to the entire region:
Global Industry Analysts Inc., an international company that conducts market research, recently published a report entitled "Frozen Fruits and Vegetables: A Global Strategic Business Report", which indicates that the global market of frozen fruits and vegetables continues to grow and expected to reach 22.6 million tons by 2015.

The best bid was that of a Japanese company who paid $93.25 a pound for geisha Kotowa Don K coffee.
Kotowa Don K Coffee ranks among the types of naturally processed Geisha.
On Tuesday some of that coffee obtained the price of $93.25 per pound and was acquired by Horiguchi Coffee and Saza Coffee in Japan, after more than three hours of bidding on the websitewww.stoneworks.com.

A quintal of fine Costa Rican coffee in is sold with an average premium of $25 over the reference price on the New York Stock Exchange.

The monthly average composite indicator price in April was $160.46 cents / pound compared to $167.77 in March. The prices were less volatile in April than in March.
Despite the dip, Robusta coffee prices remain firm and the average sales price in the first 4 months of 2012 is still above that recorded in the fourth quarter of 2011.

In Costa Rica, the current mechanism mainly benefits 30 large producers, who received $80 million in subsidies in 2011.
Despite warnings from the WTO, Costa Rica continues to subsidize rice production, a benefit which actually goes to about 30 large companies, rather than groups of small producers, and is "an unnecessary risk" according to the former Foreign Trade Minister Alberto Trejos, who added that "it is like going to the Country Club in Escazú to hand out Family Allowance resources."
