In a region where there should be no customs, borders continue to distort trade in goods.
Various policies, protectionist or open, in the region, continue to generate price distortions and encourage the pursuit of market equilibrium through smuggling.
This is what is happening now with sugar in Nicaragua, where l relatively low prices favour its illegal departure, in this case to Honduras.

The Federation of Chambers of Commerce of Central America has met in Managua, to discuss proposals and initiatives to overcome barriers of various kinds to trade on the isthmus.
"The president of the Chamber of Commerce of Nicaragua (CACONIC), Mario Gonzalez, said that employers are looking for strategies to strongly influence their respective governments with the aim of stopping them from blocking regional trade, including the closure of the borders, for political reasons or non-tariff related barriers", reported La Prensa in its online edition.

Although a WTO ruling said that the taxes and polypropylene bags and tubular fabric from Central America violate their rules, they will not be removed until April 2012.
The Dominican Republic has announced that it will keep the tariffs on tubular fabric and polypropylene products from Central America in place until April, even though the World Trade Organization (WTO) considers that they have violated international trade rules, according to the AP as reported by the online edition La Prensa Grafica.

The industry and commerce sectors in Costa Rica are reporting moderate growth at the end of the year.
The Costa Rican Chamber of Industries had projected growth of between 3.5% and 4%, but recent economic data (IMAE) which showed a slowdown in the economy, have changed the projection to only 2% growth, said Martha Castillo, vice President of the Chamber. On the positive side, the industrial sector stopped laying off workers this year, thereby changing a trend which had been in place since 2009.

In the meeting, in which twelve countries of the region are participating, new routes identified for the transit of counterfeit goods and new methods used to counterfeit products will be publicised.

The Ministry of Economy has announced the enrollment period for those interested in participating as 'New Importers' in 2012 within the quotas established in the FTA with the U.S.
The Ministry of Economy of El Salvador is inviting interested parties to participate as New Importers within the agricultural quotas established under the FTA with the United States for 2012. The period for submitting applications includes December 5 to December 23 this year, and these must include product description and custom codes code, amounts requested, internal Revenue solvency and declaration of unrelated persons.
